Rejuvenation Oil
This is a fat liquor oil. It is actually what tanneries use to "synthetically" moisturise, soften & preserve the dried out raw hides during tanning.
The hides, whilst in their early natural, porous, "crust" state were placed in large "paddle" drums, where the oil is added. The more time the skins spent being drummed, the softer/looser the fibres of the hide become & the more supple the leather became.
it is this oil depleting over time from the suede backing fibres which eventually affects the pliability & recoil of the leather.
Now, because it is only truly effective within the fibres at the rear, the problem is it will not be able to fully penetrate through the sealed, upper surface finishes to reach that area, except through cracks. However, it is the upper grain side layer which holds the hide together. Soften too much around deep, established cracks & there is risk the hide will pull apart!
We do have customers who use sparingly on the coloured, finished side with great results over time, but it does contain a mild, water miscible solvent for penetration, so caution!
This advise should be taken very seriously if planning to use on vintage red leather. The old nitrocellulose-based red finishes were unstable enough once the top sealer broke down. It can emulsify what red pigment is still on the leather & come off on clothing.
If uncertain, please contact us to discuss your project.
